PULLMAN’S PALACE CAR COMPANY
Stock Certificate, 1884.
Signed by General Horace Porter, Vice President.

This beautiful 1884 certificate for two shares of capital stock in Pullman’s Palace Car Company is signed by its Vice President, General Horace Porter (1837-1921).  A winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor and a veteran of many Civil War battles, as a 27-year old Captain and highly trusted Aide-de-Camp to General Ulysses S. Grant (to whom he remained a close confidant until the former President’s death in 1885) Porter attended at the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.  General Porter later served as the U.S. Ambassador to France for eight years from 1897 to 1905.  -BCC

1893 & 1894 PPCC “Trip Passes”

These two Pullman’s Palace Car Company “Trip Passes” were issued in 1893 and 1894 to provide free accomodations to employees and/or members of their families. Each pass entitles the bearer to a berth for travel between Des Moines and Chicago (1893) and St. Paul and Des Moines (1894). The reverse side of both passes are the same and read: “This ticket is not transferable and does not entitle any other person to occupy free the accomodation with the holder.” -BCC
