CPRR Journal Box Cover, 1865
While virtually everything needed to build the CPRR (with the
obvious exception of timber) had to be shipped
to California by way of the 17,000 mile route around Cape Horn, some
necessary items were manufactured as needed in the field. An example
of this type of item is this 1865 journal box (wheel bearing) cover.
A crude -- but quite servicable -- sand casting, it was found near the
CPRR line in Wells, Nevada.
