By reference to statements herewith submitted, it will be seen that the Passenger
Earnings decreased during the year $38,411.81, being ~^ per cent. and the Freight
Earnings increased $662,611.23, being 9:^- per cent.
The Government business included in the above shows
an increase in passengers of $47,371.13, being Wh per
cent., and an increase in freight of $139,791.52, being Wn per cent.
The Mail Earnings were $574,139, the amount 1?eing
7
ascertained in accordance with the contract between the
Company and the Government; under a re-weighing made in February last.
The percentage of Expenses to earnings in 1875 was 41^- per cent.; and for 1876
it was 40,^ per cent., being a decrease of ^- per cent. These are very satisfactory
results, taking- into consideration the present depressed and
prostrated condition of business generally throughout the country.
During the past year there has been $105,959.31 ^ew con-expended for construction.
By reference to the detailed8tructlQD' statement of the same, it will be seen
that the principal part of this was as follows:
Locomotives (4 new), $40,060.87.
General office at Omaha, for purchase of the building formerly known as the Herndon
House; and the adjoining lots, which have been occupied by the Company for the
past seven years. Cost of same, $42,800.
The repairs of the Road have been well kept up during sepairs. the past year,
and the track and road-bed were never in better condition than now. The following
renewals have been made:
2,032 Tons Steel Fails, 10,914 (( Iron Bails re-rolled, 416,747 Pine Ties, 76,991
Hard Wood Ties;
all of which have been included in operating expenses, as
shown in the statement of same appended.
The new Iron Bridge for Dale Creek, which was con- Dalp creek

tracted for in 1875, was put up last summer, and is now in use. The cost of it
was $39,4,50. This is the most important bridge on the road, and the substitution
of an iron bridge for the wooden structure will be a great saying of expense
in repairs, and will entirely remove the liability to loss by fire and the delay
which would result therefrom^
During the past winter the weather much of the time
9
The decrease of 46 cents per ton m the cost of mining
has resulted in a net saving- to the Company, in last year's operations, of $121,792.82.
The use of Cliinese labor on the Eoad and in the Mines Chinese
has been continued, and proves as satisfactory as here-labor' tofore.

And the Company has on hand, still unsold, 10,758,134 acres of valuable farming-,
grazing, and mineral lands.
There has been no change in any of the questions pending between the Government
and the Company dur-i-acy the past year. The efforts made to establish a sinking
fund which shall extinguish the Government debt at or near maturity are still
continued, l»ut so far nothing definite has been accomplished. That no
legislation on this subject will be binding- until assented to by the stockholders
is now generally conceded.
During the mouths of October, November, and December, the Omaha and Republican
Valley Eailroad was built from Valley Station on the Union Pacific R.B. (36 miles
from Omaha) to Wahoo in Saunders County, a distance of nineteen miles, and was
opened for business on the first day of January, 1877, and already pays expenses,
in addition to its advantage as a feeder to the main line. It "was built
under a separate organization, the funds being furnished from the sales of the
first mortgage bonds of that Company, and the bonds of Saunders County furnished
in aid of the enterprise. It is proposed to continue the road through yaunders
County, and probably through Butler County. This opens up large tracts of land
belonging to this Company, lying on the south side of the Platte River, -which
will now be sought for by settlers and bring to us a large trade when settled.
We have not heretofore been able to secure much trade from the south side of
tlie Platte Biver, ifc being difficult to induce it to cross the Platte.
It is quite important that something Nhould be done toward building a line of
road in the direction of the
Black Hills. This trade is increasing and bids fair to be large, and is already
being comiH'ted for by the :Northeru Pacific and Yankton routes. The, hitter
is extruding its line towards the Black Hills. There should lie cue hundred miles
of this line put in operutiun this vear.
11
Our relations with connecting roads are geiierallycoinicctirg harmonious and
satisfactory. Roada-
The trade with China and Japan is showing a satiafac- china and tory increase.
The Occidental and Oriental and the Pacific Japlla'
Mail Steamship Companies, making alternate trips, form together a semi-monthly
line.
The local management of the road during the past year has been conducted by the
same officers as heretofore, and the Board still feels the same confidence in
and warmly commends the General Superintendent, Mr. S. H. H. dark, and the lieads
of departments and local officers of the Company engaged in operating the Eoad.
Their faithful performance of the duties intrusted to them has largely contributed
to the satisfactory results
attained.
By order of the Board.
SIDNEY DILLO^,
President.
