CP 4-4-0 #173 is listed as built by Norris in 1864. CP #173 was wrecked at Alameda
Jct. in November 1869, and was so extensively rebuilt in 1872 that the CP records
listed it as built by CPRR ever after. The photo is of #173 as it appeared in
1883 (apparently taken on the same day and in the same spot as newly rebuilt
CP #48). By this time #173 was already
modified with air brakes and an 1880s style paint scheme. Also the original CP
#173 was built by Norris-Lancaster – not to be confused by the Norris Loco Works
in Philadelphia. The Lancaster shop was operated by
Norris brothers of the Norrises of Philadelphia.
