> The engine to the left, pulling a construction train ... may be an image of Governor Stanford No.1, which has not previously been identified. ... The three cab windows, apron wheel covers, colossal steam dome, proportions of the stack and pattern of striping on the tender (visible on the corner of the tank) all accord with the better known photo of the engine while new. The engine to the right, facing the viewer, is clearly a Mason machine, either Atlantic No. 5 or Pacific No. 2, as the polished iron bell brackets used by Mason before 1864, round case headlamp, stack proportions and three stanchion handrails accord with identifiable images of No. 5. —Jim Wilke
