Philadelphia, Germantown & Norristown Rail Road Stock Certificate
First railroad built in Philadelphia.
This certificate for 100 shares of capital stock in the Philadelphia, Germantown & Norristown Rail Road Company was issued on August 17, 1852. Chartered and incorporated by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature on February 17, 1831, it was the first railroad to be built in Philadelphia. First powered by horses, the PG&NRR opened on June 6, 1832.
